2600th Anniversary of Shwedagon Pagoda

The Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's century-old holiest Buddhist edifice
as well as the most prominent landmark of the country, will complete
2600th year of its existence in the coming year 2012.
The Pagoda, according to time-honoured tradition, has four kinds of
relics of the four Buddhas: the eight hair strands of Gotama; the
walking stick of his predecessor Buddha; the water filter and
yethanoke (a waistcloth used for bathing in)respectively of the two
Buddhas, the predecessors of the Buddhas. The 2600th anniversary
celebrations will be held on the fullmoon day of Tabaung(March) at all
the four entrances to the Pagoda with all the rites and rituals
befitting such a great event.
